Canada Conducts First Healthcare-Focused Express Entry Draw Since July

On November 20, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 3,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) through a healthcare category-based selection draw. This round of invitations required candidates to meet a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 463.

This marks the third Express Entry draw of the week, following a Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw on November 19 and a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draw on November 18. Notably, this is the second consecutive week with Express Entry draws, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to welcoming skilled workers.

Federal Immigration Targets for 2025

IRCC’s Immigration Levels Plan for 2025 targets the admission of 124,680 Express Entry candidates. More than 82,000 of these will be dedicated to a new In-Canada Focus category, which will primarily consist of CEC candidates but may also include those from the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and PNP-aligned Express Entry streams.

Additionally, 41,700 permanent resident admissions will be reserved for the Federal Economic Priorities category, aimed at professionals in in-demand occupations within Canada’s labor market.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for permanent residency (PR) under three major economic immigration programs:

  1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  2. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Candidates are ranked based on their CRS scores, which are calculated using various factors like age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and more. Additional points can be awarded for factors like having a sibling in Canada, a spouse or partner, or for Canadian work or education experience.

Candidates with provincial nominations through enhanced PNP streams receive an extra 600 CRS points, significantly boosting their chances of receiving an ITA.
