  1. As a retired law enforcement officer of 34 years, I was witness to many incidents of impaired driving that sadly included the loss of life and the destruction of property. Initially the penalties for impaired driving were essentially a slap on the wrist to rare short term incarceration. I read weekly the list of persons charged with impaired driving offenses, a list that seems to fill regularly. This clearly suggested to me that anti impaired driving messages and the existing laws were no deterrent to those that continue to drink and drive.
Stricter laws may help deter some but the enforcement of those laws by our judicial system must be firm and steadfast. I am a strong advocate of driver training and the increase of the age limit to 18 from 16. At present anyone with a driver’s license can “teach” another person to drive. As a qualified driving instructor I can tell you that there is a great deal more about driving than simply steering a vehicle down the road. Teaching new drivers the right way from the start through certified driving instructions will begin their driving careers “Bad Habit” free and perhaps give all drivers a greater appreciation of their “Driving Privileges” . Something to consider.
